After a successful six-month near-field communication payments trial, Czech supermarket chain Globus has decided to equip all of its new stores with contactless point-of-sale terminals.

The trial began in July this year at three of Globus’ hypermarkets in Praque and one Globus store in Pilsen, in Czech Republic. Aside from Globus, the trial was also participated in by Telefónica O2 Czech Republic, Citibank Europe, Komerční Banka, and Visa Europe. More specifically, a total of 400 clients – that is 200 Citibank and Telefónica clients and 200 Komerční Banka and Telefónica common clients – were involved in this NFC payments pilot project.

It has been reported earlier that Globus partnered with Ingenico, a French payment services provider, for this mobile NFC payment trial. Consumers who took part in the pilot carried out payments worth up to EUR20 by simply tapping their mobile phones on NFC-enabled terminals. It was Ingenico who supplied these POS terminals.

A total of 4,500 mobile payment transactions were carried out by Komerční Banka customers without any real technical issues during the trial. Most of these transactions involved values of up to CZK500. Moreover, 80% of the transactions were completed at first try and without any problem.

According to Stanislav Novotny, who is product manager for Citibank’s credit cards in the country, Citibank had seen over 2,500 payment transactions worth more than EUR1 million ever since the pilot project was launched. He noted that the average amount for every transaction was about US$20.57, thereby confirming that the most popular use of contactless payments for now is for transactions worth up to US$25.72, which amount no longer requires you to enter a PIN code.

The Globus chain currently operates 14 hypermarkets all over the Czech Republic. Globus plans that its new stores will be now be equipped with contactless POS terminals.
